One of my students with whom I'm pretty friendly had a good suggestion about trying to make my dad feel better about my move to Kyoto. She said I should show him a tour book with lots of pretty pictures so he can see it's a nice place. I'll try.

Then H-- had the even better idea of taking some pictures of his apartment and his neighborhood so Dad can see it's safe and clean. Actually, it's much nicer than where I live now.

And H-- still wants to talk to my dad to try to convince him that he'll be there for me and make sure I'm OK in Japan.

We decided to exchange fun packages. We each find something-- anything-- the approximate size of a human head and mail it. Not a real human head. Can't mail that even domestically.

I have a friend in Tokyo who's pregnant and due in early December, so one weekend while I'm in Japan in November, H-- and I will go to visit her. I'm excited about that, too.
