Words were invented for one reason...

To woo women - or so Robin Williams in Dead Poets society would have you believe. And maybe he's right. I know it hasn't been my looks that has gotten me the women I've been with.

I actually noticed the above picture on facebook while writing this blog post. You see the title blog had been "Very charmed". I do use very too often. But I can't think of a better word to describe my life than very charmed. Yes I was staring into the abyss last week, but luck swooped in and helped prevent that from going to far.

This is not to say that my life has been perfect or without difficulties. I did watch my father slowly die from both cancer and the treatments meant to cure him, but luck had a way of minimizing that difficulty, yes I had to deal with the emotional pain and grief (which I still do), but we were so lucky that he did not suffer long nor did he leave behind insurmountable medical debt.

This is perhaps why I believe in a divinity of some sort, surely luck could not be the only factor at play. Of course this brings up the inevitable question of why this divine being would provide me with such good luck and yet leave others to suffer worse fates. This is where religious doctrine for most religions lose me. Rather than simply admitting that we could not possibly fathom the intentions of what ever sort of divine force that might govern the universe, they often try to impart some lesson of personal failure on those who suffer.

The Norse had a concept they call the Norns, they were three beings who tended to the tree of life and the well of fate. There was Wryd (fate), Verdandi (necessity) and Skuld (being). Some compare the Norns to the Greek Moirai (fates), but I always viewed them as a little different. You see I always thought of them as fate being the things in your life you cannot escape, most especially being your past. Necessity are those things that are ever present in our lives, the things we all must face. Being is the intersection of all of this, what you do with your past and how you approach these nexus points in life. Sometimes people get lucky, sometimes people earn what they get, there is no one answer.

On a completely different topic... my beard has grown long enough to reach my nose if I pull it upwards I'm oddly delighted by this fact. I can tickle my nose with my beard...
