so, when my black dog and i take our short, no running, all walking am trip we go down a street by my house, and then back up an unpaved ally like street that is blocked off to cars at one end. this little dirt road is about 3 blocks long, and passes mostly the backs of the houses in my neighborhood. there are also 2 lots that are still undeveloped. most of the trees are gone but there are no houses on them, or driveways into them. this is a great place for the in town moose to spend the night.

in a extremely sleep deprived state yesterday morning i let my dog linger, and sniff the high grass in front of one of these lots. i wasn't really paying much attention for the first few moments. i was just enjoying the cool calm of 5am then i noticed that the sniffing that was taking place was becoming more intense. hunter's hair was standing up on his back, and at that point we both aware that something else was aware of us.

a baby moose head popped up and turned to look at us about ten feet from where we were standing. baby moose are extremely cute. all legs, and ears. they just don't look at all like they can walk without nearly falling. anyway my dog couldn't see the baby, and the baby couldn't see my dog. this was funny until a question formed like a left over part of a dream, where's momma?

it was then that a much larger, pissed off, sleepy, mother moose face came out of the grass, and stared at me. moose are big. really big, and usually they don't move too fast. unless you are a guy and a dog who have gotten too close to their little one. she was on her feet, and snorting before i could take a step.

anyway we ran, she didn't chase us, and i didn't need any coffee when i got home. i was already awake.
