so here's the part where i let my few friends know about one of the most amazing women i've known in my life.

her name was marion smith. ok yeah, no, i'm not being conceited. she was my grandmother and i was named after her.

she was a third grade teacher, and influenced so many young children to keep trying. i've heard so many stories about kids who always got made fun of for not being able to read, etc, and my grandmother took them aside and privately tutored them until their abilities were above and beyond those of the kids teasing them.

she was a mother. she mothered 2 children, one being my father.

my father grew up on a farm but eventually went to college and ended up doing research from the navy, all because my grandmother encouraged him to go further.

she is the woman holding sole responsibility for me getting into music. there wasn't a trip to the farm where she didn't immediately encourage me to help her 'dust off the piano keys' or to 'go make a racket in the basement.'

she also encouraged me to never be afraid of being myself.

when i first started dying my hair, my parents about shit themselves, but my grandmother told me it was beautiful, that i was beautiful.

my grandmother has influenced and encouraged me so much along the way that i really owe a lot of who i am to her.

a few months back she started becoming incredibly despondent, barely recognizing any of her family aside from me. my father could sit right next to her and talk to her and not get anything out of her, but the second i said something to her she perked up, smiled, and did her best to conversate.

a few days ago she was taken to the hospital for rehydration as she'd barely been eating. by this point not even i could get anything out of her. they admitted her to the hospital and realized they couldn't regulate her blood/oxygen levels.

my dad, sick with the flu, got a phone call at 4:30 am today stating that my grandmother hadn't made it through the night.

and that's the end of this story.
