Happy New Year. I've been busy with all sots of things lately.. mostly university work and christmas etc. i've recently started writing and working on marketing for the uni magazine. our next edition's all about sex, coming out just before Valentine's day. I'm not totally impressed with my articles but as it's my first shot, I did the best I could with what they asked me to write so I thought I'd post the unedited versions here. See I am writing things just not always my blog hehe. I've also been asked to model in some photos for the front cover so we'll see how those go. With it being distributed around campus I don't want to end up looking awful so very few people know at the moment. We'll see what happens.

Miss-turbation: You and your hand

Masturbation. A somewhat taboo, often mocked verb, the colloquial terminology of
which is often used in insult, i.e. "You absolute Wanker!" To masturbate, as the
Oxford English Dictionary (font of all knowledge) tells us, is to 'produce sexual
orgasm or arousal (of) by stimulation of the genitals other than by sexual
intercourse' or as Woody Allen once said 'Don't knock masturbation, it's sex with
someone I love'. Babies and young children naturally explore themselves but as we
get to a certain age for many of us, particularly females, it becomes a 'naughty',
secret act. For teenage boys, it almost becomes an act of bravado, perhaps due to
the obvious difference between male and female genitalia. Women's 'Secret Garden' to
quote Springsteen, hidden from sight and male genitalia on display to all who care
to look, described with harsh nouns such as 'Cock', 'Dick' and 'Hard-on'. The
physical presence of which is considered so powerful that it still cannot be shown
on television in its erect state. Perhaps this is why the lexis associated with such
an act is so male orientated. Men can 'jack-off', 'wank', 'toss-off' and vocalise
this loudly whilst attractive women (or other men) become 'one for the wank-bank'.

Masturbation has many uses; particularly important in this supposedly more sexually
'open' age is being able to show our partners, what it is that gets us off. In fact
mutual masturbation can even be an alternative to full on penetrative sex, mutually
beneficial with somewhat diminished risks. Words used to describe masturbation for
the male are non-sensical when applied to female masturbation. The average woman
anatomically has nothing to jerk or jack-off, and somehow that not wholly
inappropriate term 'fingering' is far too precise a term to encompass the whole
range of actions women can take. 'Clitoral and Vaginal fingering' two very obvious
and scientific terms that are no where near as comic or disgusting as male
terminology. This lack of well-known or at least well-used colloquial terminology
almost makes female masturbation seem sacred.

However, there are phrases that have been created and are just more rarely used such
as; 'Flicking the Switch', 'Reading Braille', 'Hiking the Grand Canyon', 'Deep
Dishin', 'Ride the Curl', 'Entering No Man's Land', 'Flying Manual (with hands)',
'Flying Automatic (with vibrator)' and the rather appropriate 'miss-turbation'.

For heterosexual men the secret of female masturbation has become less secret over
the years, being featured in pornographic films and even in television programmes
such as 'sex and the city'. However, studies show that women tend to masturbate less
frequently than men, particularly when in heterosexual relationships. Perhaps it is
simply that women are 'traditionally' more secretive and less openly crude. Although
magazines such as Scarlet designed for women, have become more popular over the last
ten or so years Pornography still largely targets male audiences. Men's arousal is
supposed to be linked to the visual and women more to the mental. With the creation
of stores like Ann-summers, sex has become more open and acceptable as has
masturbation, though it is still not such a commonly talked-about topic as in male
circles.

In evolution masturbation has a higher purpose; a female orgasm can increase the
chances of conception. With men it flushes out the less mobile, older sperm and it
can also help to prevent cervical cancer. Tossing-off is almost a miracle cure, like
sex it lowers blood pressure and can help depression and stress. Masturbation is
often given higher levels of significance in homosexual relationships. Views of
masturbation have changed throughout history. In his 1839 text on the physiology of
women Alexander Walker considered over-stimulation of the mind to lead to erotic
excitement leading to masturbation, and even nymphomania (a 'dangerous' female
psychological obsession with sex). In the past male masturbation has even been
considered to lead to homosexuality and was often called self-abuse, with disastrous
effects like making the penis smaller and other more minor ones such as causing
headaches. Though in some societies it is considered a 'coming-of-age' ritual
(excuse the pun).

Masturbation has had a male association throughout history, being seen as more
socially acceptable. To describe male masturbation there is a multitude of phrases
that are considered humorous or disgusting but these are used less and are less
well-known when it comes to female 'miss-turbation'.

Love to everyone! xx

An interesting read indeed.
I thought you couldnt show erect penises on tv until I saw a programme on channel 5 where it showed literally everything, masturbation, penetration etc the guy was miked-up for some reason.
I wrote letters of disgust to several MPs.
None of whom represented me.

Not sure why it is we have videos showing the aftermath of people being beheaded on the six o clock news and thats fine, yet someone somewhere believes an erect penis will bringforth the downfall of society as we know it.
