This weekend I saw Man Of Steel (newest Superman opus) and This Is The End (one of those "meta" type of things with a lot of people from Judd Apatow movies playing asshole versions of themselves). Both were good in very different ways.

Man Of Steel got everything just about right. It was maybe a tad more grim than it needed to be, but nevertheless I enjoyed it thoroughly. Zach Snyder is a director I tend to always like. I think Sucker Punch is a very underrated movie that I hope will one day find its audience. MOS was probably seen by more people in its first few hours than have seen SP in total. To be fair, Superman was designed to be a very crowd-pleasing summer action spectacle. It had enough Jesus references to almost be considered text rather than subtext (did it really need to put Superman's age at 33?), but that is a minor quibble. Henry Cavill is good as Superman, and I hope the sequel will give him even more to do. This movie bodes well for future Superman flicks (and maybe even the long-promised DC version of The Avengers--Justice League). Worth seeing on a big screen (though probably OK to skip the 3D, which is post converted anyhoo).

This Is The End is a hard movie to discuss. Like most comedies, one wants to mention specific jokes, but it is hard to do that without ruining them (sort of like cutting open a drum to see what allows it to make noise). It made me laugh out loud more times than any recent comedy I can think of. The trailers give away less of the overall plot and themes than you might imagine. I have now seen about eight movies or so this entire year, and James Franco has been in three of them. The haters hate on Franco, but I am a fan personally (a "fran"?) If you're a fan of self-aware sorts of comedies, I can strongly recommend it.

Two well made smart commercial movies in the summer. Always a good thing!

In all manners of speaking. And that is why I absolutely love that quote. And movie.

Little things used to mean so much to Shelly. I used to think they were kind of trivial. Believe me, nothings trivial.
