The Late Night Challenge
Late in the lab amassin' all my lit references for a grant to the allmighty NIH, and maybe that ACS petroleum fund for shits and giggles, when I come across my competition.
Competition say what?
No seriously, in this line of work its not uncommon for two or more groups to be racing towards completing the same target. Now usually this...

Eww, gross. Just realized that I've got the Boston marathon in the middle of April, the La Jolla half marathon the weekend after, the WildMiles 180+ mile desert relay race the weekend after that, followed by that Wildflower triatha-thingie a 7 days later. I'm gonna be all stringy and kenyan, just watch.
Sometimes I fill up my dance card a weeee bit too much.
Because...

I just regestered for the Wildflower triathlon, olympic distance (1.5k swim, 40K bike, 10K run).
http://www.tricalifornia.com/wildflower/2006/
This should be interesting. Well, at least my training for the Boston marathon will nicely coincide with this triathlon. And the tri is 3 weeks after the marathon, which is just enough time for a recuperation taper. And all the swimmin' will be good at preventin' running injuries....

I didn't cook enough during Thanksgiving.
Oh, there was plenty of food and all. I just didn't get that satisfaction of work = immediate gratification that I was hoping for. Ya see, one of the reasons I like cooking so much is that unlike my work, which I spend months and years to get any decent results, at home I can throw this...

A comical Saturday, a painful Sunday
At work of course.
At lunch had a nice ride out to the local comicbook and swim shops, only to get a specatular flat on my way back, right in front of this Korean BBQ restaurant. Travis came to pick me up, but not before I had experienced trying to explain flat tire replacement theory in very simple english...

You know when youre a grad student when you come into work not realizing what day/week/month it is.
Apparently today is Veterans day.
Of course, it doesn't help that the seasons never really change here, such that today's weather is a lot like any other june gloom morning.
And the worst part about it? I got up all early to study for this Kanji exam...

MirrorMask to 5k -->SD decom!
MirrorMask was awesome! Dave Mckean's still life brought to life via the Jim Henson company (Dark Crystal, Labrynth) was a masterpiece. Artistry alone was worth the $8 ticket, and the screenplay by Gaiman was, well, definitly up to my expectations...GO SEE IT.
UCSD's Chancellor's Challenge 5k was today (you race the Chancellor), and I just PR'd by 25 sec. ending...

Finally! Tonight I'm going to see MirrorMask a la Dave McKean; if you dug McKean's Sandman covers or Mr. Punch, y'all should check this out.
A comical weekend w/Space Island & Lorin
One of the things I really missed since I came down here from Santa Cruz was a comic book shop. Back when I was all strung out from trying to do a double major in chem and bio and do thesis work, my one little vice was going to this comic shop near our King St. house and...

Its like Iron Chef over here; I've got all the same ingredients here that everyone else has, but can I make my dish sing?
First it was vinyl iodides dimerizing. This w/product in the 10% yield range.
Then I switched catalysts, removing the vinyl iodide dimerization, boosting the yields up to 50%, but now I've got pinacol boronates dimerizing. This shit just doesn't...

p.s. Sage words of wisdom from the teknokitty: comments work differently here on SG than they do on LJ. When someone replies to your journal, reply back to them in *their* journal rather than yours. Cause they won't see it if it's in your journal, unless they are stalking you. So, if you choose to reply to my comments (which I highly doubt) then please do so in my journal. Cause that be the way things work here on SG.

That duck was funny. After cooking it, there was more fat than duck, which is ok I guess, since I want to attempt a duck confit and then the legendary-time-consuming-and-pretentious cassoulet.

let me know the best canyons, i need to "get away" from my lil suburbia too. the only one i ever really noticed was where the 52 is, but hiking next to a freeway kinda freaks my lungs out.

limonene:
That one next to the 52 is really nice, I couldn't even see the traffic.
If you park at the Starbucks/Henry's on Govenor, you can go north on Regents and that'll drop you down into Rose Canyon, where theres a railroad track but at least no highway. You can take that west all the way to the 5 and south to the 52, then under the 52, and then east along the 52 canyon until you hit Regents. Up regents back to Starbucks/Henry's.
