Hello all:)
I am currently in West Texas for work, and it's been such a whirlwind for me! I woke up last Tuesday (my day off) and not 15 minutes later my boss was calling me to ask if I would be able to fly down here for 18 days. Originally my partner was to come down here and spend this time working with the team at our facility here, however when she got to the airport, customs denied her entry into the US.
I told my boss I would be willing to do it, should approval be granted. around 9:30am she called me back and said that my flight was to leave at 3pm. Since this was an international flight I had to be there for 1pm, leaving me only 3 hours to pack everything I would need for and 18 day trip. I scrambled around my house getting everything packed, called my cab and was on the way by 12:30pm without even getting a chance to say goodbye to my husband who was at work.
So here I sit in my room at the lodge, 10 days into my 18 day stay, listening to the Distillers and writing this blog. I must say I am happy to have been given this opportunity to show my abilities to some of the directors as well as see how things differ at out American lodges versus our Canadian ones, now I just need to make it to the ones in Australia! I've been waking up at 4:30am to start my shift at 6am; working until 1pm. Then I take a 1-3 hour break before heading back to the front desk and finishing up sometime between 6-7pm and it's really taking it's toll on me.
The people down here are incredibly nice, with a few minor exceptions. I find it so hard to believe how uninformed Americans are about Canada; I was asked if we celebrate Christmas in Canada... The food is beyond great, the best camp food I have ever had and I have stayed at a lot of our lodges. Yesterday I spent part of my lunch break just sitting outside in the sun, it's been so long since I just sat and basked in the warmth of the sun, it felt so amazing. The nights are very cold though, it went from 25 degrees during the day yesterday down to 2 degrees overnight (77 down to 35 for you crazy Americans :P).
I can't wait to get home next Saturday! I am not looking forward to my looong day of travelling though. I am leaving the lodge at 10am for a 2 hour drive to the airport, then I have a flight to Houston with a 3 hour layover. Then I fly to Calgary, wait another 2 hours before my final flight home to Edmonton, which should land at 12:15am on the 11th.
I seem to have written enough at this point I think, I will leave you off with a selfie because I can :)
