Well I'm on right now. You seem pretty cool and above all the generic touristy crap, so I would direct you to the cooler and more affordable part of town (which is still kinda expensive).

You have to go to the village. I know that's kinda cliche, but its' true. The NYU area especially is full of street vendors and awesome walk up finds this time of year. I like the East village a little better but that's just me. The street vendors/dealers will help you find good deals on anything from clothes to books to watches to practically anything.

I highly recommend getting a village voice while you are there. It's a free paper available all over manhattan or you can get a sneak peek here: Village Voice site

That paper usually steers you in the direction of hundreds of things you can do on any given day.

The streets seem daunting and you'd think it's easy to get lost but the blocks are short and all the main roads are numerically named so you'll be okay exploring. Just remember the "avenues" go north to south, and the "streets" go east to west. So with the blocks so short you can get from 21st street to 4th street in a matter of minutes. Just remember the difference between the aves and streets and you'll be fine for the most part.

Be careful crossing some streets. You'll notice that there are no speed limit signs there, and drivers are aggresive and insane on those roads. Follow the crowds when crossing and you'll be fine.

Have a good time! Hope I was helpful.
