It's hard to comment on Michael Jackson's sudden and tragic death in a measured way. There are two camps, it seems. The devoted fans, for whom everything about him was glorious. And the cynics, who are deeply critical of his lifestyle and behaviour. There is a part of you that wants to say, Well, yes, it's very sad, but he is just one among many who died too early. But then you have to recognise that people who can be defined as superstars- and he was a superstar - hold a deeper place in many hearts.

However, I think this article by Germaine Greer in this morning's Guardian is an excellent and beautifully measured tribute to the singer, and it makes you realise why some people, for all their frailties are still special. It's quite short and well worth the read....

Germaine Greer on Michael Jackson

I would also note that it is a sad, but unsurprising, commentary on our world that, below the article, eBay are promoting Michael Jackson gloves.

A man who takes a woman shopping. smile Mmm.

As you know, the press don't really do morally ambigious, it has to be black and white for the purpose of selling more units to the braying mob. Undoubtedly, he led a very bizarre life, and had an amazing career. It's interesting how people feel they own a piece of public figures. x

He was quite amazing. It's so sad that he passed away on the eve of what could have been a spectacular comeback, and the chance to enchant a new generation.

He certainly had his problems
but he undeniably possessed an unforgettable genius.

Rest in Peace.
