Birthday Assembly!

This morning we went to school to see all the girls and boys whose birthday falls this month (including our daughters) talk to their classmates about their favourite piece of work, and what they will do/did for their birthday.

I'm a real softie for things like this, and I feel quite emotional when the Head is telling all the children about how they are all different, and all have their own special talents. Our girl held up an ad she'd done: Best Friend Wanted, which listed all the qualities she thought a best friend should have. I got a couple of nice photos, but I don't put pics of my daughter on the web; I'm sure you understand. Then we all had tea and cake. So that was a lovely start to the day.

And yesterday? It was one of those days when work was actually inspiring, challenging and fun. I set off for London at 5am, driving rather than going on the train. We have a travel ban at present, so I can't claim my expenses, but it was still worthwhile. I work for a big IT company, and was meeting up with the Account Exec of a major loss making account up for re-bid (I'm talking $100m here). And we were discussing ground-breaking technologies we could bring to the table for the client. All about virtualization of services, if you're into that sort of thing. But for once there was a real can-do attitude around the table. A real feeling of wanting to understand what the client needed, and bringing the best possible solution to them. And turning the account around from being a disaster to a major success. The feeling will wear off soon, but I like days like that! Makes me get excited about technology again.

Okay, I'll never be able to enthuse to you about my current job the way I could about being a Countryside Warden (or an antiques dealer come to that!). But then, as a warden, I couldn't afford a house, was on short-term contracts and had a really bad back. So IT may not be as thrilling, but at least it pays the bills!

I should have more weeks like this.

That's really nice. I guess that's something that I have to look forward to when my daughter gets older. Not necessarily that event...but the heartfelt emotions.

Having productive meetings are always good...but you're right...for some reason it wears off...and quickly I might add. Is your company involved with healthcare at all...as it deals with IT that is?
