AN AFFAIR WITH ROY ORBISON

You know, I realise in part it's an age and family thing. While loads of young SG members are getting stoked up and having a great Fri/Sat night, we have to think about babysitters, get all the pressures of the week out of our heads, tidy the house, etc. So we often end up crashed out in front of the TV with a bottle of wine, and wondering if we're not too knackered for sex.

But although there is a mild envy, and a certain wistfulness for my twenties, last weekend was pretty good all the same. For a start, there was a Roy Orbison concert on the TV. Now bear with me on this one. Firstly, by the time you reach forty, you really don't care whether anyone is impressed with your musical tastes or not. But secondly, and more importantly, it sparked some great memories for my wife.

You see, her mum has always been a great Roy Orbison fan, and W told me about when, as a girl, she came home from school and found her mum crying to 'In Dreams'. And this was the time she was having an affair, and waiting for the moment she would be whisked off to happiness, which as we know, rarely happens. Hence the tears. I think that's quite romantic.

And the line-up was out of this world. Just see how many you can recognise....

And on the whole it was a great weekend. Every speck of dust and dirt in the house got mercilessly annihilated on Saturday morning. I managed to finish laying the rocks in our rock garden (although I had to move a huge one at the last minute, as I'd accidentally laid it where it prevented our neighbour's gate from opening!).....

.... and then we invited our neighbours round and I cooked a huge lasagne, and we got quite drunk and spend the night snowboarding on the Wii.

Sunday was laid back too...dinner at our neighbours this time, and a lazy afternoon.

Since then, work has been a nightmare. Two twelve hour days and a trip to London to present a business case, which got thrown back in my face. I am sick to the back teeth of complex calculations and virtualized IT systems. If anyone else tries to talk to me about cloud control entities, or VDI personalization strategy, I think I may have to strangle them.

So okay....I may still be a bit wistful for the days when we'd scoff a load of mushrooms and I'd spend a fine evening putting my fingers in my wife's brain and making her legs move, being fascinated by the huge waves you could make tipping an olive oil bottle back and forth, or being too scared to open the hauntedc fridge. But, hey, good cooking, good company and a great Bordeaux more than make up for it. Most of the time...
