It is always hard to lose a friend who's that close. I lost my 13 year-old labrador a couple of years back. He always liked to hang out right next to the front porch in the tall mondo grass. The closer he got to the end of his life, the harder it was to get him to come inside. He'd sit in that cool grass for hours, just staring out into the woods. When my parents decided it was time to have him put down, we buried him there by the front porch. Everyone pitched in to dig his grave: me, my two brothers, and both of my parents. It was one of the two times I've ever seen my father cry. Then, and after my grandad's funeral.
Like I said, It is tough, but it's the good memories that sustain you after the sadness lifts.
