beach poem

you are here at the edge of the world
gazing empty to the horizon
breathing its breath.
I watch
as brine laps its tongue on your calves.

saline flows in our veins;
constant equilibrium of our internal tides
of blood sweat and tears.
we all live in flux to gaze
and inhale the earth from dawn
until night.

I watch my free feet
drawing and digging
in silica and salt, the wearing of time
as it pounds out its meaning.

we all wade into the tears of the earth
here at this horizon
as you do now.
I trace empty words,
and with the sole of my foot
smooth them to the earth again.

breathe and replenish your tears.

the first baptism of man was here;
broken down to our most basic chemistry
we all are absolved.
