Met up with my best friends tonight and we went to a pub then for a curry..yeah yeah very English but we werent the annoying loud drunk people you always get in there..that was my work colleague and friends who I successfully pretended not to notice when they came in by chance.
We were talking about music growing up and talked about Live Aid and spent most of the evening listing songs that came out in 1985 (90% of you reading this will automically be thinking 'hehe Leon is old, I was only a baby at the time'. From there I got thinking about what years really defined me turning from weirdo child into the weirdo adult with the tastes I have now..and I think I would have to choose 1990 and the time surrounding it..
Growing up the 3 main topics of conversation for us boys were football, music and girls (ok I admit, it hasnt really changed much)..
1990 - Football
I started to realise that the team I supported Manchester United were hundreds of miles away from my house and it was kind of silly supporting them, I had to change, it was painful to not support my fave player (Bryan Robson) anymore..
but I knew I had to support the local team. Man Utd went on to win every fucking cup going once I stopped supporting them....bastards.
1990 - Music
My music tastes were all over the place. In some ways it was good as you try out lots of different styles of music but I remember I had a tape which had Megadeth on one side and sugary pop singer Martika on another. My mate Mike gave me a tape with Iron Maiden on one side and on the other..
..the Stone Roses and I was hooked instantly. It was the first CD I bought (9.99 pounds in HMV Bromley - see I still remember) and it totally affected what music I loved.
1990 - Girls
I probably had crushes on lots of famous women growing up but I remember first seeing
..Winona Ryder and being consumed with awe and lust. She was such a tomboy in her early films and her dark eyes and hair.....(bateman swoons like a pathetic schoolgirl)..I've always liked slightly goth-y looking crazy tomboy girls which is why Im a member of this site.
