Time for a rant.

Seriously. If I hear George Bush talking about a "culture of life" one more time, I'm going to lose my shit. You can't take a poorly-defined and sometimes contradictory ideal (how do you reconcile the war in Iraq and the death penalty with a culture of life?) and turn it into a sensible political concept simply by repeatedly inserting it into press conference speeches and radio addresses. It's like that game where you repeat a word over and over again until it loses all of its symbolic meaning and just becomes a meaningless collection of syllables. Maybe that's the point- maybe through obnoxious overuse Bush's "culture of life" will simply become a vaguely comforting collection of nonsense sounds. I wasn't politically aware enough at the time to witness the inception of the politically correct language that all the pundits still like to harp on, but this has got to be a similar phenomenon. You can't take everything that is divisive and contradictory about American society and turn it into suger-coated pablum.
