Transformers is the New Hotness...

There, I said it ... and now I wait for imaginary fanboys to rip my post to shreds...
...
...
Ok, so far so good. I've actually been waiting for three weeks to write this post, because I knew I'd enjoy the film from before I started writing on this blog. I saw the movie last week, courtesy of my friend and her cousin who apparently always has the hook-up for radio station movie advance showings. Sure I had to wait in line with some giant fanboys (in stature, not in geek fanaticism) who played their PSPs and didn't interact with each other, and a bunch of kids patently too young to appreciate either the current opportunity to see 'robots in disguise', or the nostalgia of Saturday morning cartoons from the 80's, but it was still well worth it.

So here's the gen: Transformers is the New Hotness at about 90% hotness rating.(at least part of which is predicated on the hotness of Megan Fox). There was good character development on Shia LeBoeuf's character Sam Witwicky. His acting and comic timing actually surprised me. Character development elsewhere, both for humans and robots left a little to be desired. I mean, poor Bumblebee couldn't speak for most of the film. Character development for the Decepticons was virtually non-existent, but arguably it was never there in the cartoon either.

Bay is known for his action sequences and by and large he delivers a sensory overload in this regard... and perhaps that's as much a compliment as it is my greatest criticism of the action sequences. The robots are visually complex creatures, and it is sometimes hard to visually differentiate what's going on. That being said, there were some interesting details on the robots, like Bumblebee's facemask, or Optimus Prime's flames. Note that I use 'interesting' ambiguously like one might describe a date with an unattractive person who has a nice personality. While I am impressed in general by the film, not enough was made of certain sub plots, like the maverick DoD hackers and the gamer/hacker they rope in to 'help', and too much was made ot others, like John Turturro's Section 7 Agent Simmons, who became rather annoying after a while.

A lot has been written about the product placement in the film. However for me, the only time that it became onerous was when Bumblebee changed from his class Camaro form to the new concept car form. He changed in response to a throwaway comment about his looks that... um, seemed to hurt his feelings (this seems more and more juvenile as I describe it) and I personally preferred the character of the classic muscle car version.

I enjoyed the film and would watch it again. Being able to see it early and with my friend was an added bonus on an already adventurous trip, where I was able to eat some great food and see some coast that I hadn't seen before. The context of Transformers as much as the content are what make it this week's New Hotness
