I've been checking out some pretty interesting flicks at the Chicago International Film Festival this past week. Here are my personal mini-capsules of the 3 movies I've seen so far...

"Kissing on the Mouth" is a pretty frank and interesting slice of early 20s sexual relationships made by some young Chicagoans who, between the 4 of them, do all of the camerawork, acting, writing and production. The movie is certainly raw and cheaply made, but the dialogue isn't your run of the mill scripted crap and some of the shots are really poignant, without trying to be. You really see a lot of the melancholy that goes along with learning about yourself and facing your shortcomings at that age. The movie also has a pretty satisfactory denouement in that some things are learned, but not the usual Hollywood over-the-top life lesson.

"It's Not You, It's Me" is a mainstream Argentinean film that was somewhat disappointing for me. The movie is entertaining enough, but pretty formulaic and derivative. I wanted to learn a bit more about middle class life in Argentina and culture overall and was able to get that much from the film, but otherwise is was just so so.

Protocols of Zion is an incredibly interesting documentary that focuses in on a forged text of the same name that has been used as anti-semitic propaganda for over a century. The book details the plan of the Jews to rule over all humanity and exterminate all other religions. This book has become extremely popular since the 9/11 disaster and many people believe it to be absolute truth and PROOF of the fact that it was the Jews and not Al Qaeda were responsible. The filmmaker did a very good job in facing the issues in a really unbiased way. He speaks with many, many people, including moderates and radicals from the Jewish and Muslim communities, prison inmates, Skinheads, scholars, dumbasses, etc. Other than a few words from the filmmaker about how people should transcend religious and ethnic differences, the film is not preachy and allows you to draw your conclusions. I was pretty hesitant to see this movie, because I really thought it would piss me off, but I'm glad I did.

Have a great one folks. I'm gonna head down to see the ChiSox kick some ass tonight!
