I think the only difference between the break-up of a long term relationship and a divorce is how much paperwork there is and how much money you have to spend. I got to watch my sister go through two divorces, one to an abusive Navy Seals reject and one to a post traumatic army grunt. Lots of money, paperwork, lawyers, moving, etc. Every time it was a nasty, drawn-out affair.

Now my parents have never gotten divorced, Stosbet's parents are still together, my best friend's parents are still together. They all come with the fighting, resentment, compromise and love that monogamy provides.

I've also had my fair share of long term relationships go sour in ugly ways. You lose friends, you lose the time you were together and you have to start over. The main thing is the break-ups were always quick. Break up, don't speak for a few years, if you plan on speaking ever, and move on. Even my sister's divorces were like that. Move out, move on. Let the lawyers handle the paperwork, divy up the possessions ASAP and move on.

Now my roomie are going through a divorce. Now there's nothing graceful about divorces, but this one is a bit odd. They're still living together, they still even sleep in the same bed, and they try to remain civil. It's incredibly awkward. We talk about things like life is going on like normal even though there are moving boxes in the living room, divorce paperwork on the dining room table. An alarm clock on the coffee table for the occasional night one of them ends up sleeping on the couch.

One of them decided to keep the house, one is moving out...I think. See if I got divorced i'd first move out and then come back for my things with a moving truck and some friends. Grab everything and go, but it's so peculiar because they're trying to be so civil that it's turning into a very, very slow process. Also I don't want to pick sides, that's the last thing I want to do, but the awkwardness isn't helping anyone, it's like them being so civil just makes it worse. First, just move out. It shouldn't take weeks to move out, especially when you're living with the person you're going through the divorce with. It's just better for everyone to cut that tension. Then step two, treat it like any other break-up, go out, get drunk, and get laid.

It's just so weird being in the middle of it. They don't fight (that I've seen), they don't drink, it's just so passive and getting dragged out longer than it needs to. I'm all for them being friendly and social, it's actually a good thing, but do it from seperate addresses, do it for the kids (me and Stosbet being the kids of course).

I'm still sad the tv is going, that's the worst part about all of this.
