"A wise girl kisses but doesn't love, Listens but doesn't believe, and leaves before she is left."
- Marilyn Monroe
What do you say to something like that? Take one look at the woman's life and you see the irony of the statement. I'd like to know when she said it. Was it before, or after her three failed marriages? Certainly it was before her suicide, or murder, whichever you want to believe it was. Knowing what she went through in life I can understand why such a statement would come from those beautiful lips, but at the same time I also know the she ended up a drug addict, alcoholic, alone, and dead before her time.
I prefer these quotes because they don't assume everything in life is at best a lie:
Do not trust all men, but trust men of worth; the former course is silly, the latter a mark of prudence.
Democritus (460 BC - 370 BC)
You may be deceived if you trust too much, but you will live in torment if you do not trust enough.
Frank Crane
It is impossible to go through life without trust: That is to be imprisoned in the worst cell of all, oneself.
Graham Greene, The Ministry of Fear
