When I was in high school, all I did was paint. It's all I wanted to do forever. I had had enough art classes from 3rd grade on that by the 11th grade they didn't force me into 'art three' or 'art four', etc. I didn't have to follow any of their curriculum. I got to just come in and paint all the time. My teachers wrote me glowing letters of recommendation to get into art school. But then I choose not to go to art school. I didn't think I would learn anything. You can't teach someone to paint. And any art history, theory, etc, they would teach me I could go read about for free in the library.

So I graduated early and moved back to Portland when I was 17. Got a job and realized how expensive a habit painting is. It was a lot dofferent when I didn't have someone supplying me with paint and good brushes. So I picked up a different habit and packed away the meager amount of painting stuff I had. I finally gave it all away about 5 years later, convinced I would never be getting back into it.

I've missed it a lot in all sorts of ways, and even more so lately since I have been talking to a lot of painters. Thursday night I went over to this artsy thing on Alberta to see a freind's work, and out back of this place there was a huge piece of canvas stretched out on the ground and a bunch of paint and brushes. I sat and screwed around for five minutes or so and it felt SO GOOD to paint! I forgot how actually physically good it feels to hold a paint brush and have a big slick gooey glob of paint that you can slide around all over.

love

So that's it. I'm going to start painting again. It's my birthday in less than two months and anyone who asks what I want I'm gonna tell them gift certificates to Art Media. Two years ago all my friends gave me enough money for a pretty nice violin. I'm sure I could get a good start on resupplying stuff to paint. I ever have paintings sitting around that I never got to finish and now I can. I've had ideas for paintings for years I can finally do. I AM SO EXCITED.

I'm going to be starting to write a lot again now too for my friend's zine.. It's like I'm coming full circle and finally back to the things that have always really inspired me most. I'm happy.

What are you so passionate about creating?
