A thought occurred to me earlier today: not only do I want to get some tattoos, I kinda NEED to get tattoos.

Here is why:

In my recent introspective journies into the depths of my lackluster love life, I made a discovery. Oftentimes, girls wouldn't want to date me because I was "too nice".

There are two different angles to look at this. One being the interpretation of the "nice guy" as being the well-intentioned, but romantically clueless and spinelss slob. There was an article on this that was posted in a thread on the Lifestyle boards a while ago. I thought the article was very narrow-minded and shallow in it's shock tactics, yet there was a grain of truth to the arguement at hand. Fortunately, the characteristics detailed in the article, by and large, have been eradicated from my persona. I achieved this state thanks to a woman I took to a Henry Rollins spoken word show. During our "date" and the time we spent together, it was as if 100 gigabytes of valuable information about the subtleties and nuances of dating had been downloaded into my brain. I felt like I caught up on many years of cluelessness. I am forever in her debt.

The other reason why I am considered to be "too nice" is because of how I look. I MEAN LOOK AT ME! My "look" screams: 'mature, polite, cerebral, almost boynextdoor-ish'. One day while hanging out with a friend of mine at the cafe at a community college, she was talking to someone behnd our table and one of them pointed at me saying "y'know how he looks mature...." while making some sort of example. My visual badass quotient could really use some enhancement.

At this point I want to make it clear that at some point I'm going to get tattoos for two reasons

1. I WANT to
2. visual badass quotient enhancement

Here are my two tattoo ideas so far:

right arm: Heart wrapped in barbed wire. Above it the words "DAY IN, DAY OUT" below it "FOR LOVE". This was inspired by the line "Day in, day out, I did it for love" from the song "For Love" by The Hope Conspiracy

left arm: My name in Japanese. Yes I know, the whole Japanese thing has been done before. The reason why I want is because A) When I got my black belt, my sensei returned from Japan with another belt made for me, with my name embroidered in Japanese lettering in gold thread. B) I think it looks beautiful C) Ever since returning from a trip to visit relatives in Austria back in high school, my pride in my German heritage and my last name grew significantly. For a long time, I hated my last name; people who liked to push me around at school would purposely mispronounce it to fuck with me. Now I am proud of it and quick to correct anyone who mispronounces it.

I've always wanted to get tattoos strictly for myself and no one else; it's just that I am now seeing another advantage to getting some.

thanks, yeah, i know better than that you would change for anyone else. and yes, it's pretty frustrating being the "friend". I used to hate it being the perpetual friend before I was married. I'm sorry people make you feel like that. frown it sucks. I love having you as a friend cause you're real, intelligent, very (for lack of a better word) nice and genuine aout everything you say. and hopefully someone will appreciate 1000 times more than that.

Em cannot walk on her own yet, but is trying so hard and is getting pretty close every day. yay!!!I'm so excited and nervous at the same time. she smiles and laughs so much when she walks while I hold her. I love it!!

I like your tattoo ideas, I could say that now. I think you should do it, if you ever are ready.

and oh my god, I had that last name problem too! mine's a colombian name. ha. I don't wanna be a kid ever again.
