weird last few days, as evidenced by my *just* now getting to reading through your entry. sorry to hear about the phone - you're right, getting a good tri-band *is* tough, and worse even the cell phone stores operated by the service providers don't have many knowledgeable people on hand to provide support (or even guidance when buying new equipment).
