I'm currently waiting for the end of the world. I don't exactly believe that it will end this year, though I find it within the realm of possibility. No, I think the human race has served it's time. We had a pretty good run, but we've gotten too far away from nature to the point where our continued existence is going to kill us off. We can't live the way we do indefinitely. We've known this for a long time and have had opportunity after opportunity to fix ourselves, but it's over.
Now, there are a couple ways this can play out I think:
1) We're dumb enough to use up what little resources we have have and die out. This is the worst solution. We will foolishly cling onto what little life we have, killing and fighting each other for scraps until most creatures and plant life has been wiped off the face of the Earth, and in the end ourselves.
2) We mercy kill the planet. Set off all the nukes. It'll be fun, relatively quick, and painless. Rather than hanging hopelessly onto life, we go out with a bang. All it takes is one person to press that big red button. One nuke get's launched, everyone in the world with a big red button is gonna wanna press theirs, too. It'll destroy most life on the planet, maybe even more than Option 1, but the planet has been through worse, and on more than one occasion.
If we're lucky, we survive with a significantly reduced population and just enough renewable resources to thrive again. Bonus: We have the knowledge to not get crazy to the point that we do it all over again. Not likely though. Even if we did survive, in all likelihood their would be one person who comes up with an idea to increase our standard of living, not realizing the full implications on society and world as a whole in the future. This leads to more and more improvements to the point we rise again to the top of the food chain, destroying everything in our path and having to destroy ourselves.
We're beyond the point of no return people. You don't have to do anything but live your lives right now. When we're gone in a million years, all the resources we've used will have returned to a natural state, so I say use up what you got. We're a severe necrotizing fasciitis to this planet. Once we're wiped away, the world will return to a lush, beautiful place.
