Standing in the kitchen of some guy I had never met before tonight, I absorb my environment and smile wider than I have in weeks. I'm filled with body freezing anxiety, schoolgirl-esque excitement, slight fatigue, overwhelming joy, prepubescent awkwardness, and a slight twang of hunger {bastards were eating Hawaiian pizza}. This is sick. Never in my wildest dreams would I ever have thought that I'd be hanging out and cracking jokes with Downtown Brown. Fuck yeah.

Los Angeles opened her arms to me, and I am somewhat surviving in its silicone heavy environment. But this glorious taste of the Midwest was more than welcome. DTB is made up of some of the chillest cats I've ever met: axe wielding Neil P. with his infectious laugh {penicillin isn't required... I think}, "new" bassist, and hell of a nice guy, Rayan Z... Zh... Z-something {I think there was a K somewhere in there}, and that crazy {the good kind} Glover, manic at the drums.

I honestly wasn't expecting what had partaken. Frankly, I had no idea what was ahead of me tonight. No. I figured it was going to be like my other experiences with bands I wasn't related to: get to see a decent to fantastic show and maybe shake hands with a member or two. But the discussions had moments in that ranged from John Goodman in The Fallen to how a jar shattering in a man's ass would have recaptured interest in Watchman quickly destroyed that detached notion I was expecting. I got to meet the men of the band and befriend all the strangers they were hanging with. I'm going to remember this.

Wait. What was I... Music review! That's right... For those of you not lucky enough to have experienced DTB, their music is filled with sick metal riffs, funky bass lines, and drums beats that can't be... well, beat. The L.A. show was performed in front of about 35 people {front "row", bitches!} in the backyard of Neil P.'s buddy's place. The sound was unbelievable for its location and the set-up worked out great {the Naboo Fighter & Batman comforters tossed over the fence behind them really captured the ambiance superbly}. Surprisingly, the police never showed during their hour and a half long set, even though they were killing at midnight in the middle of a residential area {I could have hit the neighbors house with a smoke from where I was standing}. Hints of the old sings bled seamlessly into their new work, and the pace never paused for a moment. Alas, the CD I picked up after didn't have many {or any at all, really} of their new songs, so I'm going to have to wait and pick up their new copy when its out.

Repeatedly throughout the set, lyrical improvisation {usually involving ass jars} kept us laughing and very much entertained. Screaming "Chips!", literally sitting in the "pit", watching Neil deep throating the shit out of that mic, and belting out the DTB drinking song were only a few of the memories I'll be taking with me. But it was the experience before and after that I'll probably cherish this most. Those guys were so much fun being around, and so down-to-earth. Listening to them joke around and talk about past gigs and everything was so fun. *smirk* Giraffe penis. Hehehehe...

Hell, their fans were fantastic. Jovial folks, with maybe a bit too much beer in them, were hilarious. The guy who kept yelling "Chips!" behind me when they were far past that song, the lovely brunette I chatted up with and bummed smokes to, and the huge fan who played a beer can like a cowbell during the last song... They and all the others were a gas.

The musicians of Downtown Brown are ungodly at what they do, and my only regret of the night was not being able to get a picture of/with them. As I drove back home, I Love Burgers CD playing in my ear, I chuckled at the recollection of the first thing I really heard tonight: Guy: "That time at AstroBurger-" Neil P: "Do you know what Astroglide is?"

Come back soon.
