Other part of me is this soul-crushing monster totally lacking self-confidence & self-respect, so stupidly shy when it comes to girls it's laughable. Utterly self-destructive, he will stop at nothing to prevent me from being happy.

All is not lost. Put together the best CV you can and keep your eyes open for other opportunities as there are plenty out there. I'm giving serious thought to moving over to the US in May next year. It's one of a few options open to me but I want to do one last big thing before I get tied down with any serious commitments. I'm thinking Seattle or San Francisco.
