Wotta weekend!
On Friday I started working at the Museum of Cartoon and Comic Art -- this was their big art event and I got the chance to help check people in. Got to meet a ton of cool people including a major hero of mine, Charles Burns! Nice guy! And tons of hot girls too...what's up with that? Afterwards they MoCCA guys bought us some great pizza and beer -- woo!
Saturday was going to be an early one -- got to provide muscle setting up the tables, chairs and then doing some audio stuff. There were more volunteers thatn I expected and a bunch of 'em weren't doin' shit...probably there just to get the freebies (which turned out to be the case). Ran into Burns again in the volunteer's room and had him sign my Skin Deep book
Had a pow wow with a few others and hob-knobbed with Denis Kitchen (Of Kitchen Sink Press). Left there around noon then headed home and did...something? Split the house around 4:00 to head back into Manhattan for the Futura show...got caught in the rain but didn't care since it was so freakin' hot out. Hit Toy Tokyo and actually walked outta there without buying anything (tried, though to get Chicken Little block figures but they didn't have 'em in stock....)
Met up with people from TT then headed over to the gallery. Place wasn't too packed, which was cool. Ran into NY LASE and the dude was like "What up? Why haven't you called?" Alright! Found out that they were serving hummus, pita and dolmades...and oddly enough, Mojitos! The food was okay -- not made by Greeks I gotta say but the Mojitos...shit, the bartender knew what he was doin'! My shit was messed up that night
Got to shoot the shit with Futura and KAWS for a while -- those guys and LASE were up for an interview so once I get it done and posted I'll let everyone know where to read it. Stumbled home and passed out at some point...
Sunday was fucked up...with a capital "F". I'm walking to the train and passed the park by my house. Got my headphones on and I hear this woman screaming that a dog attacked her and she's pointing at this guy who happened to be walking around her with his dogs (on short leashes). This woman has blood all over her face and it was clear that something happened, but obvious that it wasn't the dogs -- both had white muzzles with no blood on 'em plus I saw that the dude wasn't anywhere around her. Things start to get outta hand and then the Sunday Puerta Rican baseball team that practices in the school lot across the street decided to step in. Man, those dudes got totally worked up! Luckily the cops just happened to be going by...
So I get on the train and exit at the 3rd ave exit and head south. I get about 1/2 way to the Puck building when I hear squealing of tires and look over in time to see a woman on her bike get nailed!
Shit, that was wack -- the woman got up, though and seemed to be okay. I think the driver had stopped enough...and that her old bike was high enough that all that happened was her getting knocked up onto the hood of the car. The driver (who had the right of way) was totally freaked out, even though she was like "I didn't pay attention".
Wotta nutty start to the day!
Got to the MoCCA event shaken, still drunk and all sorts of sweaty but managed to get the day going. I had the fortune of working the Panels and Discussion part, which freakin' rocked. Got to see Frank Miller and Neal Adams talk with each other and the best was seeing Daniel Clowes! The place was PACKED...hipsters and uber-hot punky / nerd girls. WTF? When did so many cute girls start to read comics?
Finished up, did the breakdown of the audio gear then the three of us who were manning the board went to the roof of the building and got some awesome photos of Manhattan! Headed back to the actual MoCCA gallery for the post-party, which meant SWAG! Everyone got bags of stuff donated by people from the event. I walked out of there with a bunch of books, a new Living Dead Doll and a collection of pieces by Ward Sutton, who does some political strips that appear in the Village Voice. Sutton Impact is his latest book, which he signed and had drawn this great picture of Bush!
