Skipping work today -- still trying to figure out what excuse to use. Sick? Food Poisoning? Burst water pipe?

I've called off too many times at this place and I'm running out of excuses. I would almost question as to whether or not they're keeping track of things but it seems that everyone is too busy with their own work to care. Or just doesn't care.

Saturday night I went to see Slint at Irving Plaza. The opening band was Tomorrow's Friend who turned out to be much better than expected. It's hard to say what exactly their sound was, but I will say that it was similar to fast Velvet Underground. Very good stuff, especially if you're into long jams.

After missing Slint in the 90's (although I did see one of their offshoots Big Wheel) I finally got to see one of the more influential bands of the last 20 years....who's roots actually are with the ultra-mind-blowing Squirrel Bait. There's an amazing "family tree" that you can find !here.

They played everything off of Spiderland, most of Tweez and their 2 song EP. One word can sum it up...TIGHT! I was amazed at how "on" they were -- hell, half or more of the band either had their eyes closed the whole time or didn't bother turning around. Everyone of 'em could be labeled as a "true" musician who felt the music rather than just playing the notes. A once-in-a-lifetime experience that was well worth seeing!

Last night were The Pillows and Noodles (Japan) and 2 local bands (pretty bad stuff). Avoid Daddy unless you're into bland metal.

Noodles played a full set -- these three pixy-ish girls can rock! Reminds me a bit of Strawberry Mud Pie -- another great Japanese Pop Punk band.

The Pillows came out and the sold-out crowd went nuts! They played most everything from "Little Busters" which wasn't much of a surprise since most people there knew the album from the anime FLCL (Furi Kuri). Had hoped to hear some of the older songs -- they did play a few tunes off of their recent album, which was very cool.

Overall they didn't disappoint and put on a more honest, energetic show than many of the American bands I've seen as of late. For those of you who are going to see them at any of their remaining shows, you won't be disappointed!

Ticket Watch: Unsane will have their record-release party on April 26th at the Knitting Factory! After missing every show they've played in the last 14 years... I WILL SEE THEM!!! Even if I die I'll dig my ass out of the dirt!

What other albums have "The Pillows" made? I am very interested in getting more of their music.
