Bar Noir, Philadelphia, PA 4/15/07

Man, didn't even think this show might even happen thanks to the Nor'Easter, but the van became an ark and we made it thru the deluge. Glad we did 'coz Bair Noir is a cool little place and it was another fun show! We even got called back for an encore!

Like I said, it was kinda hairy waiting around after work wondering if it was gonna go on. I did get an email from Vince at Double V Bookings saying it was all a go on their end, it was just up to us to make it thru the wild weather up from Cape May. Andy called me a few times saying he hadn't heard from the kids so I was wondering what was going on and if they remembered. I didn't know until the last moment when I got in the van and he told me they did call him, they were busy watching "Grindhouse", and would meet us there.

I stayed in the back kinda woozy and I think I even caught a few winks on the ride up. The place was right in center city so finding parking was kind of a nightmare. We ended up right across the street from the place to unload in the rain. Again an actual kit meaning bass drum and toms was provided, I just needed everything else. There were more stairs involved at this place except this time I was going down them to get into the bar. We stored some of the gear in a tiny room, the rest in a place behind the makeshift stage area. It was a tiny little place, but I liked the vibe of it.

Billy K who does an open mic night thing there every Monday I'm told played first along with the drummer from The Slot Cars. He had told me they never played together before tonight, but I though the did a nice job on some choice oldie covers. "Rave On" was choice. His Gretsch guitar was bad ass!

Our buddy Dave's band, The Slot Cars was next. We met Dave a few years ago at the backyard Johnie 3 gig at "my son's" house. We kept in touch all along so it was cool hearing how he got his own band together and then to get invited to play was even nicer. They did a great job, I believe it was their first time playing out. Never thought I'd hear a punked out version of the Philly sound classic "When Will I See You Again"!

It was then time for us. I was bummed to see something fell on my snare in that tiny room and broke the head. Luckily I could use the house snare. The drummer from the Slot Cars was really nice helping me break stuff down and set up. The bartender there was our buddy Pancake's sister. Somehow Penny wound up with a rum and coke. Which added to a couple funny moments at the set's end. Overall it was a great show. Andy did forget how to play Candy Bar when I yelled it out but covered quickly by going into Shit Happens (as it did!). He really was on with the stage prescence for this one working the crowd, thanking the bands, and saying the old standby "don't forget to tip your bartender", LOL! The crowd was kinda small, but afterall it is a small place to begin with and I think it beat the last 2 shows numbers combined! They were very enthusiastic and as I said, demanded an encore. Looks like we finally broke thru in Philly getting asked to come back there down the road and at another place Vince books at. Hope we can return soon. So thanks to Vince, Pancake's sister, Dave and the rest of the Slot Cars along with the crowd.
