Tour diary (pt. 3)

(written 7/14/06)

Greetings from room 11 of the Turnpike Motel in Kennebunk, ME. Last night was definately a hit and run show. It was over before I knew it. At least we got to play with a pirate!

Oh, one more aside from the night before. Besides laughing over the "children" sign, we kept laughing over how friggin' wavy the roads are in Western, MA. Who the hell designed 'em??

It was great hanging out at J and Andyra's again. J ended up giving Andy & Penny all kinds of CD and 45 rarities. We got to watch J & Andyra's "day in the life" movie which was great. I forget the title. They randomly picked it out of a dictionary. It was pretty funny. Also got to watch a Prozacs dvd from a local public access show. J wound up making us a fantastic meal of mesquite grilled chicken with rice, stuffing, noodles, & salad. We couldn't thank him enough for all he did for us. A truely nice dude. It was almost sad leaving.

Before we hit the interstate, we had to stop at a local UPS store to pick up our new stickers. It was cool that Penny was able to have them shipped there. They looked great even the ones they screwed up a little which they gave us for free. They'll send up the corrected ones plus more for the mistake. Stopped at a music store to try and find the piece for my bass drum pedal but no such luck. Andy called up Sluggo from New Hampshire who would be meeting us at the show with one.

The ride to Maine was great until we hit 1-495 and rush hour traffic. We still made it to the show a little after the 7:00 PM start time. Man, I was pretty delirious by the time we pulled into York, ME. Another quaint New England town. I was laughing like a loon cracking everyone else up. Kept repeating the road's name over and over, "Long Sands".

The Legion Hall was part of a little strip mall. We pulled around the back and unloaded. Originally we were supposed to play in the back of the room at a "2nd stage" area, but the 1st band was late so we took over the main one. It was kinda hectic coming in right off a 2 1/2 hr trip and set right up to play. I kinda like to get the feel of a place first. This was also the 1st (and thankfully last) show I had to actually use my own kit. It took forever to unpack it and set it up from a completely broken down state. I think Penny was finally happy I was miserable. So I kinda stressed myself out hurrying to set it all up. It was really my own fault, but I was wound tighter than my snare drum head.

It was hard to get into it at first, but it was a fun show. And it was cool to finally play an all ages show. The kids liked it and we even had a circle pit break out a few times. I did wind up using the drummer from the Jonee Earthquake Band's bass drum pedal. I appreciate that Sluggo looked out for us, but that pedal he brought just didn't feel right.

I really did dig the vibe of the little hall too. It took me forever to pack everything up. I had moved it all back into a little kitchen area to do it there out of everyone's way. After that I pretty much wandered around aimlessly until The Jonee Earthquake Band played. They were great! The kids just loved their local heroes. I thought a fight was gonna go down between a skin and a hippy, but it never happened. And talk about merch! They had a ton of CD's plus friggin' watches, lighters, pens, you name it!

Andy had called Adam from The Leftovers. That's how we found out about the motel. Penny completely re-organized the van. I thanked Don the promoter who set it up, great guy. We said our goodbyes to Sluggo and were off. We were there maybe a total of 3 hours but it sure didn't feel like it. Kennebunk was maybe 15 minutes away. Stopped for a meal at BK and checked in. Room was nice and cedar-y.

Here's a link for some pics from the show (thanks to Jonee Earthquake Band)...
