I remembered this yesterday as I lay prostrate under the HR Directors desk checking cables.
The term 'Covering his/her ass' comes from the late 18th centuary in revolutionary France. While locked in the stocks one would be quite vunerable to carnal acts from behind, especially after dark where (I assume) men would take advantage of any secured buttocks 'for a little of the Ole In and Out'. To avoid this fate a prisoner would have a friend or mercenary guard his behind, making sure it was covered by a cloak at all times to avoid being raped/sodomized, repeatedly, all night by their neighbours.
