Okay. Once again, I am in a nice suburb of Procrastination, Iowa. I'm leaving for NYC tomorrow to do a whole bunch of auditions, look at student living areas and see muthafuckin' Avenue Q, bitches! (If I could count the times I've sung "Mix Tape", maybe I wouldn't have gotten a 54% on my math finals the last year I took it.)

I should probably be packing, as I've got to be out of here by 10am-ish tomorrow, but I'm sitting here typing. I should also have sent out my first draft of an exerpt of a piece I'm working on, but I guess I'll be pulling an all nighter so that I can sleep on the plane, freshen up when I get to the hotel, see my accompianst and then try to get in a little sight seeing before my first audition.

So, does anyone have any recommendations for me while I'm there? I've been once before, and I did the backstage tour of the Met, walked through Central Park (it was October), saw the East Village, skimmed Canal Street, did the whole 5th Avenue and Times Square thing and saw "Le Nozze di Figaro" and "Gypsy."

I'm not a huge fan of galleries or museums when I only have a few days in a big city, because I figure that I would spend a good day looking at things in a contained space when I could be spending the time experiencing a bit more of the atmosphere.

So, places to people watch? Good restaurants? Places to hear music? (Keeping in mind that I'm not 21... Yet. And I'm not a drinker, anyway.) Unique fun New York things to keep a little lass busy? I'm up for pretty much anything as long as it doesn't require much money, because I'm cash poor, or something's not flowing, or something's not liquid...

Oh, that reminds me. I've got to go sneak peaks at scenery from Woody Allen movies. Suh-woon. It's too bad that a carriage ride around Central Park would be a lonely experience for me, because, as shmaltzy as it is, it sounds like a fine time.

So, I'll have the laptop handy for typing down ideas and probably will end up surfing SG in my hotel room in the late hours of the night because I am a dork.

Then I'll be headed to Philly for a day or two max to do an audition with a POSSIBLE callback. Workworkwork in that city. I guess I'll just walk around the city and hope that I find some nice things, because I know pretty much dick all about it asides from the Tom Hanks movie, which did not exactly make it look like the happiest place on earth. I'll probably be walking around the whole time with the sad Neil Young in the back of my mind. Oy.

I'm sure I'll have fun, though.

My fave joint is Teany, on Rivington Street, between Orchard and Allen. Kate's Joint on Ave B and 4th Street is great people-watching. I have a fondness for Veselka, a Ukrainian joint, on Second Ave and 9th Street, best pierogies in Manhattan. Vegetarian Dim Sum, on Doyers Street, great dim sum. (these are mostly veggie joints--I'm not veg though--is that weird?)

A long stroll up Central Park West, in the 70's-80's-90's, is a must for me. Also Bedford St in Williamsburg.

Yours in Small Rock,

Mike
