I've been working on a little project here lately.
Any of you who've read my profile knows that I love and collect Medieval Weapons.
Cold Steel makes some very good swords (incidentally, if you like swords, knives,tomahawks and other such stuff, I recommend you order their free catalog as it comes with a free DVD of them demonstrating just how good their product line is). And they also have a line of other weapons, which they make in a more practical, and at the same time, less decorative mode.
Like their War Hammer for instance. It's a very practical and sturdy weapon which can take more, and thusly deal out more, abuse than any other replica you can find. But, they give it a more modern, practial look...which I'm fine with, cause this let's them sell it at a comparatively reasonable price.
However, it just does'nt look right with a period costume.
I have however come up with a solution, and a nice little hobby at the same time.
You see, these weapons come unassembled! So you have to put them together yourself (instructions are always included)
What I've decided to do (and have already done on one weapon....see below), is to take some of their stuff, and clean, polish, and decorate them to a point where they look a whole helluvalot better.
I strip the paint layer off the metal. Sand, Stain, and Seal the wooden handle. Assemble the weapon according to instructions. And then wrap the handle in leather, which is fortunate, cause I have all these books on leather braiding which come in real handy.
What's even better, some of these weapons are discontinued and on clearance sale. So I can sometimes get them for less than half their original price!!
I've already done this with their Mace (which they no longer make), and it looks great!
Now I'm working on a Pole Axe, which I plan on shortening, and turning into a Battle Axe!
I'll try and get some pictures up (who am I kidding...you all know I'm a procrastinating turd) when I finish it so you can give me your honest opinion.
My Birthday is in less than a week....I don't think I'll whine about it this time.
