I hadn't seen my paternal grandparents in over 7 years. My Opa was a bit of a douche many years ago, so I just sort of cut ties. He had a heart attack a couple years ago and it's mellowed him out. He grew up in Germany. He was a member of the Hitler Youth (it wasn't optional so don't go thinking he chose to be brainwashed). They brainwashed kids to believe the Nazi ideology. Mydogfarted is Jewish. So I was prepared, if Opa was being an ass, to casually slip his heritage into the conversation and then leave. Instead it actually went really well. At one point we were talking about sushi. Opa said he doesn't eat eel, ever. And then he proceeded to tell us a story from his childhood.
I'm spoilering this because it's horrific. HORRIFIC. Please do not read this if you can't handle a story about life in post-war Germany.
I CAN NOT imagine what kind of childhood includes that type of experience. Part of me wants to learn more about what his childhood was like. Part of me thinks "damn, now I can't eat eel either."
We went from my Oma and Opa's to my Maternal Grandmother's place where we were celebrating the life of my Grandfather who recently passed. We had a riot talking about funny stories to do with him. My aunt did a great impression of him coughing/clearing his throat that was right on. I got to go through some vintage clothing patterns for kids and Gramma let me take them I can't wait to get started!
Alright I have to wrap this up, the smallest member of the family needs me...
I hope the four of you can take advantake of this beautiful day. I hear that the weekend is going to be cold agan. I'm battling a cold, which may or may not have been partially caused by changes in the weather.
Since you mentioned it in the past, I'd love to take you up on your invitation to visit you sometime when it's convenient. I'm sure I can fit my schedule into yours fairly easily if and when the time comes.
Have a great day.
