Ha! Just finished watching "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children". What an over-hyped, over-produced heap of fan service bullshit!
First off, do note that I only watched it to examine the quality (or - in some cases - serious lack thereof) of the animation and modeling as a whole. To put it quite bluntly, yes, the modeling was abso-fucking-lutely incredible. Sadly, however, I feel that the super-fast fight scenes in this movie were merely super-fast in an attempt to hide the rather sub-par animation at times.
Now, I'll admit that this is a huge step up from "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" in terms of animation. Honestly, though, this production could've been so much more had Square Enix started with fresh characters.
No character development. Honestly, it seemed promising at first, what with the characters being slowly introduced and all. (By the way, Vincent's cape is animated incredibly well.) However, it eventually comes to the point where the film tosses the rest of the main characters from "Final Fantasy VII" into a huge-ass battle with no introductions whatsoever.
Fan service bullshit. And I fucking hate Yuffie.
And what's the deal with those scenes of Aeris? That's nothing more than a cheap attempt at getting fans of "Final Fantasy VII" all misty-eyed. They show her at the most ridiculous times.
Oh, and I have one more rant: Let's see…this movie has awesome combustion effects, gorgeous glows and lighting, and insane levels of destructive detail. Now, why the fuck is it so hard to implement decent shadows and footprints and skid marks. It makes me fucking sick that these developers are too damn lazy to implement what should be an absolute cakewalk for them. That's what killed "Ice Age" for me.
In summary, if you love "Final Fantasy VII", then you'll probably love this abomination. If you're like me and saw through that game's [at the time] pretty facade, then you'll likely agree that this film is nothing more than a bit of eye candy.
P.S. Never watch a movie that is composed entirely of CG or so much as contains CG with me, unless you can stand hearing my constant criticism. With the exception of "Monsters, Inc.", I can typically find glaring flaws in any CG footage.
Disclaimer: I do not claim to be a professional 3D animator/modeler. (I did, however, take three separate 3D animation/modeling classes in school.) I couldn't do anywhere near as good as the people who do create such works for a living. However, therein lies my point: They get paid to do that shit. Their mistakes should not be so obvious as to be noticed by someone as "inexperienced" as myself.
