Helen is working on a thesis for university about urban legends and get's interested in a local Chicago legend she hears from a lot of the people she interview's involving a man with a hook called the Candyman who will come for anyone who looks in the mirror and says his name five times, Candyman, Candyman, Candyman, Candyman, Candyman, she researches more and finds that Candyman was originally was a gifted artist who made portraits for rich families and after falling in love with a powerful land owners white daughter he was brutally murdered by a posse, they cut off his hand with a rusty blade and placed a hook into the stump, also smeared his genitals in the honey of a bee hive so the bee's would sting him and then they burnt his body, Helen doubts the stories and before arranging to visit Cabrini-green where there has been murders claiming to be the work of Candyman she takes the dare and looks into the mirror saying his name 5 times, at Cabrini-green she finds street art and graffiti about Candyman and interviews Anne Marie who lived next door to one of the victims and a young boy called Jake who shows her the site of another merder where Helen gets assaulted by a gang while talking pictures, everyone thinks the gang was responsable for the murders and the case is closed but Candyman comes for Helen saying as she disbelieved in him and created doubt amongst his followers he must create a new legend so people will fear him once again and he can live on through their nightmares and stories, Candyman is originally a story called the forbidden by Liverpool writer Clive Barker (Hellraiser) it was based in Liverpool where I live so is one I always had affection for, the movie moves the location to Chicago, Blade was also another Liverpool based story moved to the USA for the movie, it's clever how the movie uses racism to tie into Clive's story to build a different character, Clive's idea of how stories of fear can bring a supernatural urban legend to life have been used many times like Freddy in nightmare on elm St and Jason in Friday the 13th, it was actually filmed on location in Cabrini-green and many gang members were extras and I'd be interested to know if Cabrini-green was sensationalised or shown in true life, special mention has to go to Tony Todd who is amazing in everything he's part of he's physically imposing, elegant and articulate with his incredible voice and he's genuinely scary when he wants to be, the music is by Philip Glass and adds a cool gothic atmosphere, the updated version by Nia Dacosta is also excellent
