I decided to set myself a challenge and watch a horror movie each night in October as a build up towards Halloween, some movies are well known and others not so well known
Night 27 - Alien (1979)
Alien is a beautifully made movie, it just looks absolutely stunning and the attention to detail of every single shot especially in the way they are lit is incredibly artistic and must have been painstakingly hard to set up, it's made with a lot of thought care and imagination Ridley Scott also did that so well in his other movies of that period (Blade runner and Legend), The artistic design of the Alien world and the Alien creature itself was created by Swiss surrealist artist H R Giger and the Alien (xenomorph) is mind blowing, it stays hidden for a lot of the movie but it's a mixture of biology mechanics and eroticism, you can see an almost human body shape with tubing and mechanical elements and if you look closely at its head especially at the back it looks like a big dick
Giger always added erotic elements to his designs an example is his doors or entrances often look like vulvas for the movie they toned this down a little but it's there if you look for it, it's actually quite a slow movie but uses a lot of suspense and as I said it's beautiful to look at, it's become a big money franchise now and it's spoilt by over use of cgi but this one and the action based sequel Aliens are must watch
