I want to start a band. I've always wanted to be in a band.
Do you know how hard it is to start a good band? I've pretty much decided that the only way it's going to happen is if I teach my wife and some of our friends to play instruments.
My abilities: I'm a decent song writer and I can sing like a fuckin' bird, man. Like John Doe from X, my voice is practically a reincarnation. I say that not to brag, but because it's the truth and gives you some idea. I can play a decent rhythm guitar, too, but I'm no guitar hero. Mostly due to my lack of patience for obsessive practicing.
I want to start a pop band. Not an ironic pop band like Weezer or something, who do the "oh yeah!" s and "baby baby"s with a wink and a grin, but an honest to goodness Big Star, Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Blondie, Ramones, Beach Boys, Byrds, Harry Neilsson, etc, fuckin' pop band. Not a hipster's ironic inside joke.
I don't want to make records that sound lifeless like Avril Lavigne's The Matrix, but I want to make records that sound fucking good. Radio songs, man, I want radio songs in the classic American sense. Not lo-fi 4 track muddy indie murk that sounds ashamed of itself. I want to hear my songs blasting out of car windows on summer days, and a thousand pretty teenage faces singing along.
You ever rummaged through the musician-wanted ads? It's either nu-metal crap, cover band crap, neo-grunge crap, pop-punk crap, or indie crap. It's all crap. Occasionally I find a pretty good guitarist who's a bit interesting, but he always wants to be the lead singer, even if he can't sing and his lyrics are shit. And it's not even enough for me to find a good guitarist, drummer, and bass player. For my ideal band, I need at least three of us to be able to sing. *Really* sing. Fuck me!
Where are the people who want to write tunes and melodies, who care about song-craft and nuance, who want to hear some harmony and something to sing along to?
It should be added that I'm also completely conflicted and also want to start a different band which will DESTROY FACES like the Stooges or Rocket From the Tombs.
Maybe we can alternate between pop-styling and world-eating.
Also, as far as large men who are frontmen go, I'd hope to come off more as a terrifying and charismatic Howlin' Wolf or Charles Mingus than a... say... Meatloaf. Haha.

Alos, I wanted to say about your news idea:"I'd be more intersted in your opinion than in your summation of other peopole's opinions.", but I want to say it as politely as I can/ It's a good idea though I really like it. I'm perhaps a little bit tipy so I hope that Ihaven't offended you.
I suppose I could do anything as long as I was singing. My vocal range and my tastes are pretty diverse.
However, sing is all I can do. That doesn't really make for a promising career in a band.
