So I'm watching this comedian Elvira Kurt on Comedy Central with four of my friends, and she's really funny. Really, really funny. For the first thirty minutes. Talking about about her mother, all the crazy stuff you do when you're a kid, and all the weird nicknames people have for each other in relationships.
Then... she makes The Announcement (you could almost hear the capitol letters) that she is gay. No shit, Elvira? I'm so surprised! You only set off my Gaydar when I... oh... looked at you! Who gives a fuck? But she goes on and on and on and on about it. On and on. And at first we're kind of chuckling, but it continues minute after painfully unfunny minute. Literally half of her show was unfunny, cliched riffs on squares and her immigrant mother's intolerance.
Let me say this. It should be obvious, but if I don't say it, someone will say I said otherwise. I AM NOT UNCOMFORTABLE WITH HOMOSEXUALS OR HOMOSEXUALITY IN ANY WAY WHATSOEVER. Not one tiny bit. Lesbians? Fantastic! Gay men? Peachy!
You know what would be neat? If instead of making The Announcement, the comedian just talked about the funny/stupid things their same-sex partner did just like a straight comedian would, like it was no big deal. Because it ISN'T. I think that would be a lot bigger step toward progress than preaching to the converted.
Why do some homosexuals feel the need to shove the fact that they're gay down people's throats? It's not a guy saying, "Oh, my boyfriend and I went to the movies last night.." it's "Oh, yeah, that movie sucked dick, but then... so do I!!" Oooh, so provocative! Think you're shocking the square homophobes! No, you're shocking reasonable people with your crude language in an inappropriate setting!
You are gay. So what. I am straight. So what. I don't want to hear the details -- from anybody! Especially when I didn't ask!
