Upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS today.

This is the second Long Term Support version of Ubuntu released by Canonical and I need to say I love it. I would have most likely liked it no matter what, but several new features that, though not unique to Ubuntu are new to this version.

First it boots fast.. even with my slow as ass BIOS and my dual boot partition slowing things down it's still ready to go in under 1 minutes on it's first boot from system on. That is a plus as Ubuntu had been getting bloated in that respect.

Ubuntu also has a new look, a dark almost black default theme with the minimize and maximize buttons on the left side ala OS X. I switched to the Lighter Radiance Theme which is more my speed. Both are very polished and are accompanied by several new desktop images that are all very professional. Very OS X like as well.

You also have the added features of built in Ubuntu One support for the OS to back up documents, chat, contacts music, etc... into the cloud. 2gb is free (like Drop box or similar services) and 50gb will cost $10 a year.

We also see social integration with the ability to have single log in with your Chat, and Social Network sites like Facebook and Twitter. While typing this someone actually messaged me on facebook which isn't open and I had a full chat with them with the OS system, it works really well. I can also view Facebook and Twitter (not that I actually use it) through Gwibber which is also fairly integrated.

The biggest thing that I really love and has me smiling from ear to ear right now is, iPod Touch and iPhone support out of the box. I loaded up Ubuntu 10.04 for the first time, pluged my iPod in it automounted and it asked me to open Rhythmbox and my iPod was visible right away. Nothing was needed to be installed. On a fresh install I would assume Codec's would need to be installed before you can listen to music.

With this I can add my music and photos to my iPod Touch with out any issues and play from it.. I still need iTunes for upgrading the OS or changing Apps, movies and TV shows or what have you.. but for music management I can now use Ubuntu. And no Jailbreaking is not required.

Visual effects wise the Advance Compiz settings are also now included by default so you can do everything from cubes to fire effects without adding anything to Ubuntu.

The only real miss is the Ubuntu One Music Store.. and this will be temporary I'm sure but it seems kinda limited music wise, and because I'm not in the US I am put into the world store and have to use the Euro as my currency to purchase. This makes no sense because I have no idea what the exchange rate is like. But it's there and it is being built on and this is a good thing.

All in all it's a good release and is the smoothest upgrade I have yet had..

If you have tried Ubuntu or haven't recently, give it a shot I recommend it.
