There's a place in the southern desert, on I-15, where the scrub turns to stone, and rivers begin to run through the dust. A place where the sky is the color of my true love's eyes.

In this place, the land rises up from the desert barrens and becomes a rolling sea of Sedona red boulders, gigantic, and the black asphalt highway twists though them like a hunting snake.

You wouldn't know it if you haven't trekked.

There's a sign there that says:

ZZYYXX ROAD
No Services.

In the absolute middle of nowhere, there's this sign.

And every few years, I pass it on the way to California from Utah, or Colorado, or wherever the hell I am; but it always make me feel like I've passed a threshold, and that I'm coming home.

That damn sign has always given me a feeling I've never experienced anywhere else; the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere, alone and armed, strapped onto the back of 500 pounds of throbbing iron and fire, with nothing but a knife, a bedroll, and the clothes on your back. It's the feeling you have when everything is now and your destination has slipped away, and in that second, you realize that nowhere matters, and all you want to do is ride forever; to shift into a zone where desire controls your every action, and punches through the constant, subliminated pain of our everyday lives, and makes it...

Just.

Simply.

Disappear.

Your body is dying every day, you know this, though you've forgotten the feeling of your flesh dying all around you every second of the day. you ignore the weight of your own meat hanging on your bones.

And this is just your body; what about the daily excoriation of your soul?

Imagine the feeling of no compromise, or sacrifice, or rationalization; no broken hearts or whitewashed lies, or having to listen to your boss make racist jokes, or walking past homeless people as they rot in front of you and beg for pennies; no hurts or hungers or miscommunications between lovers and strangers to distract you from your pure moment of zen. The sensation of being entirely alone and untouched and alive.

And every time I pass that sign, I imagine myself simply fading; a solitary rider, alone in the middle of nowhere becoming so at one with the now, that the future has no use for him, and will not let him pass.

Gone into the arms of Kali-Ma, in the place that is beyond time.

ZZYYXX Road.
