Friday of next week will be my last day working a day shift. Due to economic harships, yada-yada-yada my company is downsizing its projects and in terms of what I do the day shift is disappearing entirely. We're taking over nights, which were handled by people with far less seniority. Those people don't have jobs anymore.

A lot of lives were changed today. My head is still spinning.

In a way they've tasked me with closing down the day shift, since I'm the only person working every day of its last week. Half the people I work with will already be on nights, so I'll only have a skeleton crew at my disposal. One other person each day, two different people throughout the course of the week. People I rarely interact with. It almost feels like I'm arranging a funeral no one else - or no one but strangers - is going to attend. A solitary experience.

So it's a weird headspace for me today. But at least I still have a job. And I now get to be nocturnal again, which has always been my more natural state. So sobering though. A bullet barely dodged.

What kind of company do you work for? I ask because the way you describe it sounds very much like a job I used to have working for a publisher of trade magazines. Day/Night shifts almost totally separated with most of the senior people working the day. I left it last July and they closed down the office I worked in back in November.

Anyway, yeah, I bullet dodged. My current company has already gone through two rounds of lay-offs and I'm still there. It's like I'm Neo or something.
