I nodded off at work today. I partly blame the comfy, custom-ordered chair the guy who uses my computer on the night shift ordered, but for the most part it's the dead silence of the newsroom after our deadline has passed and the pages have been sent back to hit the press. That said, this is West Virginia - I could fall asleep trying to read what sometimes passes for news here.
I think it was last week that the big story was some lawmaker in one of the southern counties who was trying to get Barbie legally banned because she sets an unrealistic standard for little girls. Noble cause, but not something the legislature should involve itself in, especially when a couple thousand people have already lost their jobs to plant closings this year.
If it wasn't for my iPod, which was blasting Jawbreaker today, or the occasional Nintendo DS game, there are days I could slip into a coma at the office. It can be a miserable place. They've tossed some of my front pages in as contest entries for state media awards, but I can't be bothered to really give a damn. I barely remember making them.
On a lighter note, I've finally discovered King of the Hill just as I believe it's about to go off the air. I can't get enough Dale Gribble. Or Bobby Hill. I can relate to the awkwardness.
