I finally finished McCarthy's The Road yesterday morning, during my hours of downtime at work. The book isn't even 300 pages long and it still took me around a week to finish the thing because I had to put a down for a couple days because the doom and despair can be overwhelming, especially if you're given to those feelings anyway.

The end, though it was laid out fairly early on, downright destroyed me. I could feel light tears welling up while I sat in the middle of an office full of people. When I see the movie later this year - if it actually manages to find its way to my Podunk town and they don't make any major changes for better mass appeal - I'm going to be a blubbery fucking mess before it's over.

A beautiful story about fathers and sons though. I have a weakness for them...like that DVD of Big Fish I've owned for years and almost never watch because of the state I'm in after the last few minutes. Mesmerizing. Touching. Devastating.

Whatever I read next should definitely be some lighter fare.

i saw them when dear you came out. i still have that cassette i bought the day the album was released. the dude next to me at the show was rocking air guitar through the whole set. it was out of tune too wink i think most people think i was talking about the movie. i have never even seen that movie. hunted down thorns of life on utube. i am in love all over again. i was in tears when jawbreaker broke up. held a grudge against jets to brazil, but am over it now. sometimes it is hard to move on. i am older now...so bring on the thorns of life please. and thanks for the info. it made my week. for real.
