Report from Denver:
Flying in to Denver yesterday, the pilot announces that we're supposed to do final prep for landing. I think, "Great, we're early.", finish up the sudoku, and pack up my stuff. I then proceed to look out the window to see Denver. Instead, I see dirt. Lots of dirt w/dry river beds and runoff beds. A couple of houses and roads. More dirt. Then we pass what I think was a motocross race track and I realize that the dirt is a different color. Once we land, I further realize that what I thought was dirt is actually this odd scrubby grass, which is brown because it's late October. Ten minutes of this and I'm still not seeing a city--we actually landed with me seeing only a bit of civilization, like cars and some suburbs. . .
Once we land, I notice this odd looking collection of white teepees that I'm assuming is a building. I think, "Gosh, maybe that's the terminal, I've seen odd terminals before." and then we proceed to taxi *away* from it, so there goes that theory. It turns out to be the main terminal after all, but we drove that plane all over the freakin' place, so it was definitely not obvious at first. I think that if you plopped the Denver airport in place of the RDU airport, it would take up half of RTP as well. The teepees turn out to be a fabric ceiling in the main terminal and someone in our group had heard that they were supposed to represent mountains. Cool, but very weird. The inside of the terminal is like a galleria and probably has as many shops as our biggest mall in Raleigh. (Yeah, can you say "I live in the sticks"?)
Overall, Denver seems very nice--the research center I'm here to visit is quite lovely. The 19% relative humidity is killing me and I may need to be reverse mummified when I get home, but the mountains are gorgeous and the weather has been killer.

And what's everybody going dressed as for H-ween? I love a good costume. . .
