It started out with the DoomedByProxy in the unexpected lead as the long time underdog... After holding that solid lead for 10 rounds the tables swiftly began to turn as the tiles seem to favor more and more the reigning champion (DoomedByProxy's Mom).
Like Mark Twain against a dyslexic baboon the lead shot to 'The Mom' as the tiles just started to look like a haze of Sanskrit in the eyes of DBP... but he held on and worked with a feverish fury to shrink the now 75 point gap between them.
As the tiles were drawing nearer and nearer to an end DoomedByProxy diminished the lead to a deficit of a mere 30 points but with a rack of Q-N-E-E-E-E-E and no U in sight it looked bleak.
Later came the X... a P...
The Scrabble Gods were showing their lack of favor to the poor challenger.
Dripping with sweat, hands as clammy as a 13 year old boy attempting to unlatch his first bra in a sprint towards 2nd base he pressed on to only a few tiles behind... the score was 477 to 500 and holding E-C-R-P-D he desperately searched the board for something, anything to rid himself of such a pile.
The board was tight. Filled to the brim with all manors of words forcing even the best of players to search and pray to find an opening to prevail. Just then he spotted it... a N with an opening... a U with only enough space for but a single tile to either side...
This was his chance. Confidently he put down his E-R-D to make 'NERD' for a minuscule 4 points bringing it then to 484 to 507 in time for his next turn... the FINAL turn... C-U-P... a last ditch effort at a taste of victory he never felt and he fell short... 491 to 507.
One and one hope only he had to make his dreams come true. To make his way out of the gutter. To earn the respect of his Mother (and that's about it)... 5 tiles remained in her rack but would they be enough?
10 points. 10 would not be enough to take the lead, he thought. 491 to 497. "6 points?' he thought desperately. But wait, there was one more little detail about the final count that he was unaware until consulting the official rule book. Not only do the remaining tiles get deducted from the holder of those tiles... that same quantity of points get added to their opponent's score. 501 to 497!!
"I FINALLY BEAT MY MOM!!"
