My Mom wrote me an email today telling me how she was working for Dean's campaign and she came up with a great slogan.

"FACT BASED GOVERNMENT, NOT FAITH BASED GOVERNMENT"

paying_attention and I were just talking the other day about how when we lived in Europe, we learned that they see us there as a very religious country, and in a way we are. Its strange...I think that alot of people in this country just go to church because its "the thing to do", but the rhetoric of Christianity is really rampant in our government. Its always god bless and under god...I have always felt uncomfortable about that. I think that there can be no equality with out the complete sepertaion of church and state. Its written into our laws, yet in America seems to be completely ignored or undermined. Especially now with federal funding for faith-based charities, and the possibility of vouchers for religious schools. Even the new civil rights struggle we are currently embroiled in (though noone seems to be adknowledging this outside of the gay community), regarding the rights of same sex couples to recieve equal protection under the law. These are all issues that are being tainted by religion when they should be issues for the LAW, and all will in one way or another promote inequality...

I am sad about Dean's failing campaign, but I agree that he is probably not the best candidate to defeat Bush. I am still not sure how I feel about Kerry, but we'll see. My state's primary is coming up, so I'll be making a decision soon. Sadly, getting the Bush administration out of the White House has to be my #1 concern, and all else must come second. I think we need a revolutionary president, but I don't think America would elect one. For a variety of reasons (corporate media, school systems, religion, culture/lack thereof) people are too ignorant/apathetic to really realize or care whats going on in their country and on their planet. I don't believe that the American people are bad, and I don't think for example that any of them WANT the rainforest to be cut down (causing the extinction of species, air pollution, poverty, etc.) But I also know that most of them just don't/can't associate the fact thet they shop at WALMART with the tragedies that are occuring today in the rest of the world. People are just too uneducated/lazy/busy to notice or care in this country. And that's the real tragedy.
