I had a nightmare today. I had a very odd, disturbing, haunting nightmare today, and it's still bothering me right now as I write this.

My having a nightmare is odd for two pretty significant reasons. Reason number one is because I rarely ever dream anymore due to the fact that my sleep apnea keeps me from reaching REM sleep most nights and even if I do hit deep sleep I never remember them. And the second reason is I went to sleep in the first place because of having a very bad headache and I usually never get headaches.

So, in my nightmare i'm just coming out of the backdoor of a house I don't know yet seems somehow familiar. My father is there playing with my kids and he seems happy in a bittersweet sort of way, I had this feeling as if he knew that this was all as much a dream as I did and that he felt the same sense of overwhelming dread that I did. I looked up into the night sky and there I could barely just make out the outline of as many jet fighters in the sky as there was stars. I pointed them out and said "look, up there..." when suddenly all Hell broke loose and the sky was filled with the sounds of gunfire and explosions so loud that it rocked the ground below our feet. My father grabbed up my children and we headed in the house as fast as we could to hide and when we made it in there he tried to tell me something that I couldn't hear over the noise outside and that's when I woke up.

Now, usually i'll be the first and last person in a crowd to stand up and say that dreams are just dreams and don't mean shit but this one felt different. I don't have any idea what it was supposed to mean but it felt like I needed to know what my father was trying so very desperately to tell me.
