Problem solved.
Moving the machines onto the switch fixed it, so the hub is to blame. I'll have to do some more analysis to see whether it was simply overloaded and performing poorly, or if I need to replace it. Phwew. Now that I'm 2 days behind on everything else, it's time to get crackin'.
