The time has come. It's been 2 years that I've led the Dream to Kill Counter-Strike team... 1.5 years that I've funded our server(s). $1600+ later, tons of memories, lots of good times, some bad ones, some really annoying fucking kids, and plenty of real life visits...and I'm done funding the server. I'm not sure entirely what this means for the team, since we are already inactive, but I would imagine the remnants of the community I helped build will truly begin to fade away.
This is actually a little sad for me. Think if you were the captain of a sports team, or actually, the captain of a backyard sports team. You're not official, not superstars...just a group of friends that plays all the damn time. Many of your teammates play 4-5 hours a day with you, it's almost like a full time job. Now do that for 2 years, with over 35 people. You know every person that plays, you know their personalities, their play style, and they look up to you as a player and as a leader. And then watch it all slowly fall apart, until you finally put an ax in it. The community. You just killed a community that you spent 2 years building...a place where a bunch of friends all came to hang out and play, and have a good time. Where new people would come, and see how much fun everyone was having, as opposed to anywhere else; and they would stay, because of the people you brought on, and because of you.
That was me. [DtK]-Marik-DFA. Dream to Kill Leader, Server Admin...the guy who thought it'd be really cool to get a license plate that said "DTK DFA", who thought about getting tshirts or hats for his guys that had the tag's on front and back. Who fixed the website up when it needed it. Who custom modded the forums so they'd be more fun for the team. Who would race home from work or school to make sure he could get his team together to play in a scrim or a match. Who got phone numbers for his teammates, so he could call and find out where they were. Who's been told of more personal problems than any person probably cares to hear about. Who attempted to be a fair leader, who gave way too many chances to people that deserved none. Who considered the payment for the server to be a required portion of his paycheck.
*sigh*
